How to Naturally Treat Your Depression

Let’s face it. Depression is daunting, but so are some of its treatments. SSRIs, MAOIs, TCAs, SNRIs, nerve or magnetic stimulation, seizure therapy, and even neurosurgery are available to battle depression. For the most part, drugs and intensive medical therapies are only necessary for severe or persistent cases of depression that cannot be resolved in talk therapy or by means of other alternate therapies.

While therapy and medication are key in controlling depression, there’s also a lot you can do on your own to fight back. Making changes to your own behavior -- your physical activity, diet, and lifestyle -- can be effective natural depression treatments.

Lifestyle changes are a very important part of treatment,” says Ian A. Cook, MD, director of the Depression Research Program at the University of California Los Angeles. On their own, Cook says, natural depression treatments can beat back milder forms of disease. For more severe depression, they can complement other approaches. When medication and therapy aren’t enough, treating depression naturally through lifestyle can help push people toward full recovery.

“Fighting depression is a war that’s waged day to day, not just over weeks and months while you wait for other treatments to take effect,” says Dean F. MacKinnon, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

If you’re depressed, or have been depressed, you need a routine. Depression can strip away the structure from your life, letting one day bleed into the next. That absence of order can also make your depression worse.

I quite agree on the effects of exercise & fresh air, I saw the difference getting a dog made to my SAD (seasonal affective disorder).

The fastest and most natural ways to Cure Depression naturally are: Get at least 20 mins daylight (especially in winter) everyday – preferably in the morning, to help get your body clock back in rhythm. Ideally combine that will gentle walking (for 20 minutes) in nature (good for the soul, and highly restorative)

Everyday eat – an apple, a bananna, a (raw) carrot and some root veg/potatoes. Ideally eat some greens everyday too.

Go to bed by 10.30pm in a very dark quiet room, and get up by 8am every day – this also re-sets your body clock. I couldn’t believe the difference this makes! If you can’t sleep, it’s usually because your body is not tired as you have not done any exercise all day (even though it may feel exhausted, its a different kind of tiredness).

If you do all of the above, I can pretty much assure you that you will feel a speck of light at the end of the tunnel within a week, feel so much better you will want to cry tears of happiness within two weeks, and feel amazing after a month!

Eating well is important for both your physical and mental health. Eating small, well-balanced meals throughout the day will help you keep your energy up and minimize mood swings. While you may be drawn to sugary foods for the quick boost they provide, complex carbohydrates are a better choice. They'll get you going without the all-too-soon sugar crash.

Sleep has a strong effect on mood. When you don't get enough sleep, your depression symptoms will be worse. Sleep deprivation exacerbates irritability, moodiness, sadness, and fatigue. Make sure you're getting enough sleep each night. Very few people do well on less than 7 hours a night. Aim for somewhere between 7 to 9 hours each night.

If you decide to try natural and herbal supplements, remember that they can have side effects and drug or food interactions. For example, St. John’s Wort—a promising herb used for treatment of mild to moderate depression—can interfere with prescription drugs such as blood thinners, birth control pills, and prescription antidepressants. Make sure your doctor or therapist knows what you are taking.
