Facebook Apologizes for Deleting Abortion Post

Facebook apologized Monday to a reproductive rights activist who posted detailed written instructions for a Do It Yourself abortion. The apology said the instructions were deleted on accident because they were mistakenly thought to be in violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

“Do you think Facebook should be able to delete certain types of content? If so, which topics should Facebook not allow?” If each of us is able to censor, filter, delete or disallow things we don’t like within our premises, coupled with still being in compliance with any applicable law within said jurisdiction, then surely Facebook “should” be able to do similar. Facebook listed certain topics in their own legal/policy pages which topics they can and won’t allow. I mean, one can tell them their thoughts what Facebook should and shouldn’t do, and Facebook will ultimately decide on their own what’s “right” for them. Likewise, one can always decide to go elsewhere. It can get frustrating if Facebook seems arguably inconsistent following their own rules dealing with especially sensitive, difficult issues like this one….until we find ourselves in a similar situation, maybe.

Abortion has always been acceptable (or tolerable, or “the least of 2 evils”) for many people.

I think it poses a health risk and they should take it off. They should never apologize for this. Human life is not disposable.

I don’t get why people are enraged Facebook might be anti-abortion, just because they deleted a post about a do-it-yourself abortion. I haven’t read that post, but it sounds kinda dangerous.

It's Facebook's program they can delete what they want.People can post their stuff some place else. I'm glad I don't have to deal with posting self help instructions that give the appearance of profanity.

That is the essence of why the founders defined FREE SPEECH. If you don't want to listen, you have the CHOICE to not become 'friends' with this person...

First of all, Cytotec (misoprostol) is prescription only in the US and Canada. I can't speak for other countries. It would be difficult but not impossible for women who reside in those countries to DIY. The dr needs to prescribe it.

"...were deleted on accident..."? How about "...were deleted BY accident..." or "....were accidentally deleted..."? Wrong preposition, Ms. Freeman. As to the topic at hand, I'm pro-choice, but I think a post such as how to self-abort a first-trimester fetus is risky. If the mother dies or becomes infected in the process, then what?

pro-choicers WANT women to die from coat-hanger abortions so they can add it to their propaganda

The instructions were for the use of medications, not any sort of surgical means. Yes, there could be complications similar to those related to miscarriage. Of course, if the right-wing, "small government" types get their way, miscarriage will be prosecuted as a crime.

Just because they use a "Medicine" instead of a coat hanger, it does Not mean that the abortion is bloodless. It could Still do a lot of damage. And it will be painful as well.

Facebook punked out. I'm sure that if someone posted how to kill someone outside of the womb by shooting, poisoning, or knifing them to death they would remove the post and ban the person. Another victory for legalized murder proponents against those who are least able to defend themselves!!

I'm going to abort Facebook. I'm going to do it myself. I haven't been on there for too long, so it's not too far along; first trimester as it's been under 3 months. It should be easy and it's my right to do so, as it's My Life & all that. After my painless separation from Facebook, when I have wiped this unwanted mistake from my life, I will feel much lighter and unburdened, and will be able to go on with my life without missing this thing I was attached to, no not in the least...
